Hidden rust question
« on: 04 April 2005, 14:44 »
I was wondering if many of you guys could help here! I have the GTI trim on my car and i was just wondering how bad could the rust be behind it?  I can see on one of the front arches that its a bit chewed away but i was wondering what kinda condition are the bits hidden along the sills at the bottom of the car?  Also anyone had there arches and that rebuilt and sprayed, if so what sorta price did you get?

Cheers
Ben

One tip for trying to prevent the rust occuring in the first place is to make sure you clean right up under the rear arches when you wash your car. I find a scrubbing brush followed by a sponge right in around the lip of the rear arch works well. Obviously this only applies to the rear arches as the fronts have plastic liners.
If rust has set in behind any plastic trim it will probably be quite well advanced by the time it is visible around the edges of the trim. If you suspect you have hidden rust it's probably best to just strip all the plastic off and see exactly what you're dealing with. Haven't had any such work done so I'm afraid I can't help you with prices. I'm planning on stripping all my plastics off next winter to make sure I don't have any sudden rust surprises a few years down the line.

my old 16v rusted the whole rear inner arch without me knowing, you couldnt see anything from the outside. then i stuck my hand through it one day when fitting rear doorcards

the car was then promptly sold!!

lol! I don't think mine is that bad but i will deffinitely be stripping it down in the coming months to see what lies beneath! Only had the car 6 months so not sure what could be under there at all!  When i get the money, think im just gunna get it all sorted (if it is that major) and give it a good old spraying!
