GENERAL INFO PLEASE

I am looking into buying a Mk II Golf Gti.  I currently own an 02 reg Clio which tho nice looking has no guts at all and am seriously considering going a bit "Old Skool" with the Golf.

I would be spending upto ?4k, so that puts me within reach of the ultra rare restored show cars as well as the highly tuned ones, but what im really looking for is a minter for about ?2-3k.

I have read the 8v VS 16v debate but what I really need is some general info about owning this car.  Insurance info (i will be getting quotes) would be useful.  I would be 20/21 with 3/4 yrs no claims.

0-60 speeds and BHP info, pics and an explanation of whatever is meant by "big bumpers" i see in lots of ads.

my insurrance is ?1014 fully comp atm. (21, 0 ncb, SP30) on my 8v '87 GTi

For ?3-4k you could buy a really nice golf. even if you only spent ?2k you'd still have another ?2k to add your little bit of flava to the golf world.

Big bumpers cover the bottom of the car, where as the smaller bumpers are only a 3/4inch bumper. imo Big bumpers are much better. to go really old skool most people use small bumbers.

The 8v are groups 14-16 but i think 16v is 15-17 teratory.
8v 0-60 between 8.5-9.5 Std
16V 0-60 7.5 Std

Big Bumpers where put on from G to J reg and have front foglights in them.

An 8v golf is great fun to drive, they wont beat everything on the road but they will cartch a fair few cars out.

Thanks for the info.  I havent found quotes as low as that yet and have 3 NCB.

I had a MKII 8v on a C reg a few years back and it seemed like it had more low end grunt but went flat above 4,000 RPM. it was stock and had 120,000 miles on the clock. I think a good exhaust and an induction kit would have cured that though. I just bought an absolutly mint F reg 16v GTI with 70,000 miles and a full service history for 995 pounds. So far I love it. It seems to have good power down low and loads of punch from 3500 rpm through 6500rpm. It is stock with the exception of the exhaust. Mine is the small bumper and I will leave it that way. I kinda like them . In my opinion both are excellent fun and value but after having my 16v I won't go back to the 8v probably. I have been told though that you can do more to an 8v though. Anyone else hear that before? The 16v is definatly more expensive on cover note though.

The 16v is more tuned than the 8v , so yes you can do more to an 8v, but those mods do need doing on the 8v as it does lack a bit of grunt in todays terms. The 16v still keeps up with a lot of the so called hot hatches these days

You pays your money you take your choice, any golf will be leagues above the renault and if bought well will last for years to come.

I wouldn't go mad seeing as your still fairly young and any insurance quote will be steep.

I would say don't be tempted by a tarted up car if its over the odds money wise, there's plenty of golfs out there so hold on till you get a gem.
