mk3 diesel oil light/rev counter
« on: 25 May 2011, 12:06 »
howdy fellow boat captains.

sorry to spam the forum with non gti related questions but i know you guys know your cars.

i have a 1.9 non turbo mk3 diesel. recently the oil light has started flashing but the level is ok.

it did it again this morning and i noticed that while it was flashing, the rec vounter was reading zero. after about a minute the rev counter began to work and the oil light stopped flashing.  I am thinking the only way the two issues can be related is down to the wiring or an earth in the clocks? or is something more sinisher happening.

just a bit more info. when the key goes in the ignition the oil light comes on constant as normal. most of the time when it fires it goes straight out. occasionally it flashes. Today was the first time i noticed the rev counter not working whilst it flashed but this could be coincidence.  also the service reminder flashes when i first start up. (it has had an oil and filter change about 3k ago), the oul light stops flashing around the same time the service reminder stops flashing and the odometer appears - could this be the connection?

thanks in advance, dave

If it has oil pressure... either the sensor or the dials are faulty.

Otherwise its lost oil pressure... Await bottom end failure

If you have rev counter issues, likely to be the dash unit.   Those engines are tractor eninges, rock solid, rarly have pressure issues

Might be worth fitting a gauge and checking the oil pressure
