alternator warning light
« on: 25 May 2011, 22:51 »
Hi does anyone have any suggestions on what is wrong with my car.
i have replaced the coil packs today well 2 of them as two have already died on me in the last month so thought i would replace the rest as it is the end of the month and payday and now when i drive down the road under acceleration the alternator workshop light come's on then goes off when deaccelerating, only comes on when you give it the full beans. and does'nt come on under light acceleration.

Could be the bearings in the pulley that are going causing it to slip or maybe the belt isn't tensioned correctly.  Similar thing happened on my TDI Passat until it eventually threw the belt off.  Ended up just fitting a new pulley to the alternator.  Funnily enough my sister has just had to replace the pulley on her Golf TDi as well.

could be just coincidence.  Check to see if its making any noise, mine was or is anything else affected e.g steering.  My sister first noticed the problem when her PAS started making horrible noises, because the belt was slipping it was affecting the PAS pump.  What model do you have?

I know the TDIs are know for pulley problems, but not sure about about the 1.8T.  I am no expert on this but with the problems I have exprienced and the fact it only happens under hard acceleration I would say the belt is slipping for some reason.  Someone else on here may be able to suggest another cause. hopefully its something simple
