Starting issues when cold or hot?
« on: 16 May 2011, 21:10 »
Evening All,

Just picked up a 2ltr 8v golf with 120k on the clock on an R plate.

It has a few issues and after doing a few searches ive found that the answers cover of some of the faults but not in exactly the same way as mine so thought i would post to see if anyone can help please.

First thing in the morning it will start and then stall straight away, i got round this by gently holding it on the throttle at about 1.5k for 20 seconds then it idles ok.

Once started it runs ok and if you stop and restart a few hrs later it starts straight away.

Today after being sat in the relatively warm sun (after being left for 8hrs or so) it woundnt start for ages it starts then stalls imediatly and i couldnt even hold it on the throttle after about 15 times i got it started.

Is it worth getting a vagcom to check for any fault codes any pointers for the one to get?

Any ideas on where to start with the starting problem?

Also seems to have a fair bit of play in the gearstick the linkages under the bonnet look ok so i was wondering if i need to look under the gearstick?

Cheers

Barney

Thanks for the replies, does the fact that I only have issues when the engine is cold mean anything?

If you haven't already, please read the following thread:

It could be any one of the problems noted in that linked thread, however try your #30 Relay first as it's one of the cheaper options and easy to change. :afro:

Cheers hadn't found that post to be honest. Very good advice, from the description the ecu temp sensor seems to be likely suspect , does that effect the temp on gauge / mfa as these seem consistent. ill also give the tb a clean as that costs nothing.
Cheers

Just thought I'd update on this, I've cleaned the tb and now it seems to start fine cold or hot. The only thing is its idling high now about 1200rpm. I did leave it for about 3hrs with battery disconnected. Do I need vagcom to reset? Or should I start looking at some of the other suggestions?
