Why did VW replace the 1.8 20v with the 2.0?

As above. I have been reading alot of reviews of the mk4 gti since I got one and it seems that the majority of people think that replacing the 1.8 20v N/A with the 2.0 8v was a step backwards from VW.

I know that the 1.8 was criticised in early tests for its lack of low down torque but did this have anything to do with it?

1.8 20v is still the better choice even in n/a form

i disagree i have two 1.8 20v n/a now s an i since bought my wife a 2.0 8v and it feels a much better drive than the 1.8 quicker and more rsponsive really is in my opinion

I will agree that it is more drievable as the torque is more readily available but they're a bit too slow, id rather work a bit harder and have the 1.8 which does actually produce a kick higher in the rev band. I think we all know that the turbo is the one to have anyway.
