Opinions on moon mileage gt tdi!
« on: 12 May 2011, 07:29 »
right guys, i'm looking at getting a gt tdi, and with only around 2 grand to spend i know i'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel as such i'm not expecting a minter. i've seen a 115 pd 6 speed down the road from me, 2000 w-reg, £1700,  but has covered 196k it has a fsh but just wondered what your views are on this kind of mileage? i'll be checking cambelt, clutch etc but realistically how long can these engines go on for? better still has anyone on here got a golf with similar mileage that can put my mind at rest?
lastly, this will be my first venture into tdi ownership, are there any common problems assosciated with the tdi's or the pd's in particular? many thanks for any advice as it will be most valued and appreciated

I know somebody with 250k on theirs.  I'm not up on prices but that seems a bit spendy for a 200k car!

I'd be tempted to get a cheaper petrol car, Mk2 1.8Gti maybe, they're not half bad on fuel anyway.

Seems a lot of dosh for something with some many miles plus it will not be easy to resell if you needed to.

Might be better to look for a petrol unless you do a lot of miles.

I had a gt-tdi 110 on 98 s reg which i bought in 2002 with 96k on the clock it was a brilliant car and sold it last febuary with 214k on the clock for £1600.

Never had any major problems with it just wear and tear so i think as long as there well looked after they should go for miles! We only sold it to get a passat estate as we needed something bigger and thats got 147k now as well sweet as a nut.

These GT TDI's just seem to be flying at the moment even with the cost of diesel,   so that price doesnt seem too expensive, though im sure you could do a bit on negociation,, try for one around 150k,,

cheers for the replies! right just an update, turns out its actually a 110 gt tdi, however the condition of the car is superb- it certainly hides its mileage well. it has a full service history although the cambelt was last done 74k ago (3yrs ago) the garage have agreed to change the cambelt, tensioner and waterpump and the antirollbar droplinks (knocking noise from front on test drive) if i pay the asking price (£1700) is the cambelt interval 60k/4yrs? according to the service book its only had one cambelt change!

everything about the car feels fine, but that mileage is still putting me off slightly, gonna let them know tomorrow if i want it, however if i buy it i'll have to sell my mk2 gti

cambelt is 60k or 4 years.
has it had the clutch done? or the flywheel? as if either go its going to cost £500+
apart from that just check all the usual mk4 faults
my bosses 130 is on 198k and he's had no major problems
I often wonder why people never expect sarcastic comments from me - they're the only reason I speak...
