How many miles is a VR6 good for
« on: 29 March 2005, 20:10 »
Been looking at a few corrados and encountering some right polished turds.

Anyway my question is in regards to the engine? ive seen one at 130,000 its been resprayed in areas and generally there is no rust on the car. The accelerator pedal seems a little stiff the car goes really well but those miles scare me.

should this be avoided and how much is something like this worth with miles like that its on an N reg

any help?

from what I know it they're over 100k change the timing chains before it kills a few valves.
VR6 will know more than me obviously. It's one of those things you should change just to be on the safe side.
if the engine is well looked after and not neglicted there's no reason why high mileage should fail.

Hard to say. Depends on service history really.
If the car has been really well looked after then cam chains should last the lifetime of the car.
Its a big job if you are considering getting the chains done, gearbox out, so about 800 quid.

cheers for the reply

I was asking as i was unsure my mates vr6 corrado forsale has 83k on an L plate and this 130k one is a storm on an N plate, apart from air con which dont work and the alloys they aint much difference. my mate is asking 5k and the owner of the storm wants £6700 and its been heavily blown in everywhere the L reg is an honest car with little work on it.

Wasn't the storm a 2.9 over the standard 2.8 tho?

No.  All corrados are 2.9.  Golfs are 2.8.

The storm was just a special edition - final production run type thing i think.

Storms have leather, air con, bbs solitude alloys and only came in blue and green.

They only command higher prices due to rarity.  Not sure how many came to uk, 750 or so?

You should be more interested in condition and history than getting a storm.  Although if you find a mint storm then that's a bonus.

A VR6 isn't a way of life, it's just a car.

in all honesty storms have that "oooh its rare and special" thing that oak greens have, when in reality theres not much to warrant paying over the odds for. there was nothing on a storm that wasn't available as a dealer option on any other vr6 so it was just like buying one with all the options added on.

i was given the story on how rare it was by the seller, but apart from a few stickers saying storm on it theres bugger all to warrant a massive price increase on what is a very high mileage car. One thing that did worry me on this car was how stiff the accelerator was, now either i didnt have my weetabix in the morning or the adjustment was way off can this be adjusted? ive never drove one like that before in any car.

i might have a go myself with a red crayon and write on the back storm.
