1.4 firing order

See in my manual it says firing order is 1-3-4-2 and cylinder 1 is located at the flywheel end, simple enough now how i do i know where the cylinders go to on the cap that has no numbers? and how do i know what way round the cap must go? am i complicating things here? Also fitting a new rotor arm how do i know where that would sit? just a bit of advice to help clear it in my min would be great, sorry if this is a re post i did have a quick search  :smiley:

the cap doesn't matter as long as the leads are correct.

I suspect cylinder 1 plug is at the 1-2pm ish mark, followed by 3-4-2 going around.

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

Ahhh brilliant thank you, now one more question how do i know whgere to put the rotory arm back on? is there a way to adjust the timing as i have a miss fire nearly all the way through the rev range and im wondering if its the timing? Will i need a machine or can it be done by hand and eye?  :laugh:

you'll need to put cylinder one in TDC position to get the dizzy timing correct - its done statically when the engine is off.

jack up the drivers side front wheel, take the cam cover off (unclips on GTI's)
put in 3rd and turn the wheel until you get these marks aligned...



then the dizzy arm need to point to cylinder 1 position - from memory there is a mark on the plastic ring on the inside.

Put it back the cap on and refit cover, lower etc.

Done.

Im assuming this counts for just a 1.4 cl (not gti) abd engine i believe?
Also when you say have the rotor arm point towards cylinder one? do you mean where the cap has no.1 cylinder plugged into it?  :smiley:

I think it should do - though never worked on a 1.4, only the 1.8 8v and 2L 8v GTI's.

yes.

Just use common sense, if it doesn't look right then ....
