17s on a Mk2
« on: 09 September 2003, 18:22 »
Ello everyone! Im postin this question for a mate, so bear wit me please :)

"I have a F-reg Mk2 Golf GTi 1.8 8v. Its lowered 35mm on Gmax springs with standard shocks. Its currently running 15s, tho i have ordered a set of BK 17s. Theyre the correct offset, and are running 205/40/17 tyres. Wot arch work will i need to do (if any?)? Is it best to take the car somewhere like R-Tec?"

aparently with those tyres they'll go straight on, but I'm thinking the same as you my friend and my 15's are getting pretty close to the arches when I have people in the back.

I think G60 arches and getting them rolled is a good idea. gives a bit of leaniance when you load the back up (if you ever do) or jump into a drop in the road going a bit too quick :D

I've heard it's about ?80 to get them rolled, but don't hold me to that. :)

good advice my last mk2 run 17" with very little probs but i did have the arches rolled, 35mm should not cause to many probs if you get this done, mine was slammed on coilovers approx 100mm drop and only gave probs when people where in the back ,check the condition of your shocks , as my raddo runs 17" and shocks seemed ok only had slight rear arch contack but on replacing them with new shocks problem solved.

My last golf has 17s with the same tyre size as you are getting (the offset makes a lot of difference mine were et35) and I had G60 arches and the arch lips cut (rolling is better as less chance of rusty arches in the future). The car was initially running minus 75mm springs but the ride was too harsh for everyday use, so put on minus 35mm springs and the tyres never rubbed and got full lock even with 4 up and luggage.
The handing is not as sharp as 15s but looked damn good and the lad who has the car now loves the handling!
Cheers
