Misfire
« on: 27 April 2011, 22:59 »
Evening!

New to the forum, just registered tonight.  I wondered if anyone had experienced a misfire with their Mk6 GTI's?  I was driving out of a 30 mph zone last night into a 60 zone, accelerating steadily and the engine seemed a bit lumpy.  Then the emissions warning light started flashing and the engine started misfiring.  It sounded like it was only firing on 3 cylinders.  As I tried to find somewhere to stop, the EPC warning light came on and the message on the dash said take to 'workshop'.

I found somewhere to stop and switched off the engine.  Left if for a couple of minutes and then started it up again and the warning lights had gone off and the engine seemed to be firing OK.  I rang the local dealership this morning to see if they could take it in for a diagnostic and they can't fit it in until next week.  The guy I spoke to said that stopping the engine and restarting it may have cleared the fault but I'm not happy about driving it very far until it's been checked out.

Is there a risk of knackering the CAT if it's not firing properly?  If anyone has experienced something similar and can give some ideas I'd be grateful.

Cheers.

Hi , wellcome to the forum, Is the car brand new if so , drop the car off on the forcourt and get it checked out. Dont take no for an answer from the dealer they have a duty to get it sorted ASAP. If it was my car I would take it for a blast get rid of the cobwebs, see how it goes from there

Hi and welcome.

Echo Steve's comments. Another option is to ring VW Assist (youll need to tell them its just happened) and theyll get someone out ASAP, get you a courtesy car AND get it into your local dealer.

Mine had a intermittent problem for the first 3000 miles or so, sometimes when I was at about 3000rpm and went to accelerate it would bang as if the brakes had been slammed on and would not allow me to increases the rpm until I dipped the clutch and tried again,i took it to VW and they could not find anything wrong, it cleared itself eventually :undecided:.Welcome to the forum by the way

Had the exact same problem with mine under full throttle. Turned out to be the spark plugs... they were changed and it stopped. Then the problem came back and it turned out to be coil packs also. Both changed and now runs ok.. no flashing EPC(?) light

p.s. should all be done under warrenty

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.  The car's not new, its nearly 18 months old and has done nearly 15k miles.  Up to now it's been faultless and goes like a train.  I had a MK4 V5 before this which I had remapped to almost the same bhp as my GTI.  I do miss the 5 cylinder engine note but the GTI is fantastic.  Handling and response is a world away from the V5, and it does nearly 40mpg!

I'll see how it goes over the next week or so but it will be in the dealers for a service soon so I'll get them to check it out, unless it happens again in which case it will be straight in.

Incidentally, mine has an annoying rattle coming from the steering column.  It isn't mechanical and has been into the garage to be investigated once.  They did cure it briefly but it's back!  Anyone else come across this?
