Centaur Supreme 2000 185/60 R14
« on: 08 May 2011, 19:50 »
Hi just recently rotated my tyres as the car was not looked after by the previous owner and the front tyres were underinflated and the tread wore out on the outsides. I rotated from front to back as the back tyres were in much better shape and did not have the characteristic wear of underinflation on them. The previously front tyres and now back tyres are all season radials made in Russia..(should've looked more closely when I was buying the car really...but I didn't)

Now the steering wheel wobbles at speeds above 50mph when the boot is empty. This gets worse as the speed increases.

Anyways I decided to buy some Centaur Supreme 2000 tyres as above off of eBay and will put them onto my car sometime soon as I bet the overworn tyres are not liking the rotation to the back of the car. I think a blowout on the back tyre should be easier to control than the front. (at least that is my experience in life anyways..but every car that I have owned until now has been rear wheel drive, so I may be wrong on this for a golf)

Unfortunately, the tyres are made in Australia and don't have a max inflation pressure or very much marking on them really just what's in the subject. Somehow I think they must be legal if they were sold by Kwik Fit-but I maybe wrong again, but hey living in the UK is interesting.

I followed the initial inflation guide for the vw golf cl 1996 four door model that's on the petrol tank flap, but I think it may be a little low and that's the reason the previous owner had excess tyre wear.

It reccomends 28 PSI for the front and 30PSI  for the back when the car is not really weighed down.

Would it be prudent to keep the tyre pressure above this, say at about 32 for the front and 34 for the back?

(i think under a heavy load the specifications allow for even higher pressure.)

Since these new/used tyres bought off of eBay don't even have a max tyre pressure on them, I have no idea what they can be inflated to. They do have a decent tread of at least 7mm on them. (much better than any of the tyres on my car at present)

Kwik Fit doesn't really sell these tyres anymore, so they were not of much help to me when I called one of the local branches...

Any advice?

Oh and should I put the new tyres on the front and move the older ones to the back???

The roads where I live are really poor, maybe the best idea is to rotate the old tyres around again to what they were before and just drive them until I get a blowout and then change then to the Centaur Supreme 2000.

What's this about a fine for having worn tyres on your car here in the uk-saw that's it's quite hefty...

How can the govermnent justify such high fines looking at the current state of the roads...

Oh just wondering about that...never mind..I should stop being querrolous..

Anyways any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.
