My new 16V Mk2
« on: 19 March 2005, 20:34 »
Found myself a car today, deposit given.

The car is a '90 metallic black big bumper. No rust and very very good bodywork. 150k mils with replacement engine at 122k. Rainbow interior, Lowered 35mm and full magnex s/s exhaust. 5 spoke alloys (wanted BBS   but can be changed in future ). Lots of maintenance carried out - new clutch, front bearings, wishbones, brang new VW rear calipers, gearbox linkages and more.

Bad point is drivers seat bolster is shot. Need guidance anyone on how to take a passenger seat and convert to drivers. Also cam belt needs done which I will need someone to recommend a specialist to do this for me in the Birmingham area? Any suggestions? I reckon I'll get the cambel and chain done and have it setup properly.

I paid 1000 but we have agreed that the cost to do the cam will be knocked off.

I reckon I got a good fair deal, whadya reckon?

A very happy new valver owner

Sounds like you got a good en there m8? Nice price too (especially if the current owner is happy to let u knock the cost of gettin the cambelt done off)?

Speak to Jody @ http://midlandvw.co.uk/ to get the belt done, they are in Cannock.

To repair your drivers seat, best thing to do is get a good passenger seat & swap over the bottom cover & foam piece for your worn out drivers one. Its a fairly fiddely (sp*) job but well worth doin.

Cheers pegasus.

Forgot to mention the previous owner has had the car for 9 yrs and was thinking of droppin a 20V turbo block into it, but is buying new house and they both have a car each on top of the GTi so it had to go. Great respect to the previous owner who obviously loved the car but had to let it go. All I can say to all is it hasnt gone to a chav, and I'm looking forward to ownership of a retro classic definitive GTi.

I'll post pics as soon as I get the chance.

cheers

I have found myself a donor passenger seat to carry out the fix to my drivers bolster/cloth.

Any tips on how to do this?

Drivers seat has an extra adjustment feature (the angle adjust located on front right by floor), so obviously I'll need to use the driver seat mechanism, but change the cover. ??  How do I do that??

As for the seatback, the tilt-forward mechanism to let passengers in - this will have to be change over so once I do this its gonna leave a hole on the side where the mechanism used to be. Any tips on covering this up?

Who's carried out this "surgery" before?

Yes, ive done it

You need to seperate the 2 parts of the seat (tilting half from fixed half) by removing the tilt wheel &the plastic covers. Then you will see the pins on which the seat back pivots. There will be a clip thingy in a groove on this pin, you need to remove these clips, then you can seperate the two seat parts.

Next look underneath the lower part of the seat, you should find two pieces of steel wire at the back end of the seat (used to tension the material). Remove these to loosen up the cover, then carefully pull back the cover from the seat base.

You will only be able to take the cover so far, then you will come across thicker steel wire that attaches the material to the foam insert. Using two pairs of pliers, unhook all of these, and you should now be able to remove the cover from the foam.

Do the same to your donor passenger seat, transfer the good foam and/or good cover to your drivers seat.

Hey presto, 1 refurbed drivers seat
