HELP!! Blue smoke from my MK2
« on: 18 March 2005, 16:31 »
I've just recently bought a 1992 oak green MK2 Golf GTi (one of the last ones). I let my heart rule my head on this one. body is in fantastic condition but didn't notice until I got home that there is some blue smoke coming from the exhaust, im totally gutted.

I've done some reading up and it sounds like it could be worn valve guides and stems seals or even worse worn pistons or bore wear. You only get blue smoke when the engine has warmed up and you really rev the engine but when its idling you can smell burning oil coming from the exhaust and a hint of blue smoke.

I'm going to get this sorted next week and get a few quotes form some garages but I don't want to get ripped off. I don't want a garage to say that I need a complete engine rebuild with new pistons when it could be only stem seals and valve guides that need replacing.

Does anyone have an idea how to tell the difference or will I have to trust what the garage say.
Does anyone know a decent honest garage in Northampton or near to Northampton

Cheers

sounds like the rings are f**ked you can try getting the valve stem seals done first this can be done without taking the head off as well so shouldnt cost to much than give it a week if it still smokes them its bad news it will be the rings and i aint got a clue how much somebody would charge for that as it aint a small job.

Might well just be the valve stem seals. I always thought you only got the smoke on start up in the morning or on heavy deceleration, however, Hazels Audi proved me wrong. That only smoked when hot and you could smell it when it was idling. I changed the stem seals without removing the head and problem solved

2 to 2 1/2 job on an 8 valver without removing the head and the seals are only 60p each. Well worth trying first.

Have you checked the cylinder compressions? That was a big give away with the Audi as the compressions were superb.

if it smokes on idle its the valve stems

if it only smokes on high rev's its the rings

2 and a half hours but it was the first time I had done it without removing the head and initially I tried using the compressed air technique but my compressor was playing up so I had to switch to the 'non-fraying rope' technique. Worked out a lot easier in the long run and next time I reckon 2 hours max

there is a easy way to check your stem seals, open road take her up to about 70 in 4th gear and then leave it in gaer and take your foot off the throttle and let it overrun down to about 20 and then floor the throttle whilst still in 4th if there is a puff of smoke when you floor it the seals are knacked if it smokes on a constant throttle your rings are gone.if your rings are gone then your pistons are gone if your pistons are gone you may as well get bigger ones give big boys toys a ring they are really helpfull.they sorted me a set of 92mm pistons for my motor with head gasket for about ?350 gives you a capacity hike to almost 1900

Thanks for that I'll just have to get the stem seals sorted first and then take it from there, I just hope its just them
