Tuning mk 1 golf
« on: 15 March 2005, 19:14 »
Hi,
My mate has just got a mk1 golf gti in faded lime green  .
He is going to respray it so we gutted the car to do a propper job. I was wondering while the engine is out what would be the best way to go about getting a bit more power, i was thinking of skimming the head and maybe gasflowing it what does everybody else think?

start with decent air filter and exhaust then a gas flowed head is never a bad thing then add a cam and have it chipped to suit and it'll rock!!

but filter and exhaust are the easiest and cheapest so start with them!

No, you cant chip a MK1!

As mentioned, get K&N air filter, exhaust, 4-branch manifold, skim and gas flow head, faster cam, audi throttle body. Should be enough for a bit more 'pep!' Just make sure your brakes are working well!

Hi cheers for the replies, what is the standard exhaust manifold made of is it cast iron or tubular steel cos it seams to have a strait through exhaust system and i was wondering if they replaced the manifold as well.
What is the recommended amount to skim off the cylinder head ?
cheers

I'm sure the exhaust manifold/downpipe is tubular steel. Will (at engine, not exhaust end) terminate in two pipes on a rectangular flange - usually a 6-bolt flange.

How much to skim? - Not certain to be honest.
