Should something be attached to this??
« on: 17 March 2011, 11:00 »
Morning all

I have sparks flying out of one my terminals off the starter motor which does not have anything attached to, should it have a connector on it and where should it go too, when it is sparking you can hear it crackling....I did  Removed a connector that was on here that was making it tick over horrible and make the acceleration very juddery but it had not wire too it, it was just a small blue connector...

Any help much appreciated, hope you follow it and sorry picture is not perfect...

It is the bottom connector at the 3 o'clock position when looking at it from the drivers side...

thats a coil. and you should have 2 black wires to it, plus a terminal without a wire on it which stops anything shorting out on the spare terminal. sounds like the blue thing you removed. if its sparking, ticking or running bad then it suggests you need a new coil. gsf sell bosch ones for cheap, or any post 87 mk2 one would do you pretty much.

are you sure its that terminal causing the problem, and not the spark plug lead? i'd be suspicious that the actual cause of it, and you fiddling around with the coil has made things worse/better as you nudge the wire. a set of leads is dirt cheap so well worth it, id also do the cap, rotor arm and spark plugs at the same time

coils are pretty reliable, though yours does look ropey from pic but its hard to tell

Rj thanks mate, the leads are fine changed not long ago, changed distributor cap a month ago and that solved it, but not it has come back, would you stick to coil being knackered mate, really appreciate your help...
Thanks

were the leads a good make? maybe pop the lead off coil and see if the end looks ok, also look at the end off the coil socket to make sure its not cracked or summat. if it still arcs after that then yeah look into getting a new coil :)
