With that many miles it should have lots and lots of history. If it hasn't I'd walk away. Bare in mind it wont be long before it needs it's second cam belt replacement. Things like suspension, brakes and clutch are getting to the age where they need replacing too if they haven't been already.

the mileage isnt really an issue (just do the usual checks, blue smoke on start up etc), as top has said if it aint got history walk away because you may be buying a can of worms, id require proof of when the cambelt was last changed (along with tensioner pulley and idler pulley) also the water pumps are known to fail at around 80k miles so id see as to wether this has been done, other than them bits on the engine they pretty bullet proof, there are a few known electrical probs on the engine and a few other areas (maf sensors, temp sensors, boot and door switches, check all light up when doors opened! other wise alarm/central locking can play up) the rest of the running gear is pretty good, rear axle bushes are known to fail causing a twitchy feeling in the back end of the car, and the front anti roll bar bushes take some hammer (especially if car has been lowered) these can cause a 'knock' now and then on the front end of the car.

?5000 is a pretty good price for a 'w' plate just give it a good once over and check with the owner/history if any of the bits have been done mentioned above. If they havent got any proof or dont know wether theyve been replaced etc (even if service book stamped up), id go for the haggle option, but id be looking to knock ?5-600 off the price.....

go test drive and enjoy!!

I dont think high millege in these golfs is a major issue, longs its been looked after, ive done a hell of alot of miles in mine since i bought it and no real major problems (touch wood) other than those god damn dodgy electric windows!!!

Well just got back from the test drive.Car was in mint condition from the out side apart from a couple of stone chips & a bit of condensation in the drivers side head light?.Took it for a spin & drove really well you would think it had done 9000 instead of 109000.Brakes/suspension felt really tight tyres in very good condition etc.
Now the bad bits, inside was very clean apart from the smell of smoke(i don't so it stuck out like a sore thumb).2 of the 3  rear head rest's were missing ? & now the best bit!!! i asked about all the points you all pointed out above before i test drove .The dealer didn't have the service book to hand(was waiting for the last owner to forward it????)but he had a print out from the dealer who had done the servicing who is a main dealer & would call them to ask about the belt etc while i was out on the test.
When i came back he was on the phone to the dealer & guess what they recon the cam belt & all the bits don't need changing untill 1020000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!bollocks was my reply no cam belt goes that long.
I thanked him for the test & left.
So i'm still on the look out.
Thanks again for all the good advice.

Guys i brought a gti mk4 on a 98 S plate with full service, private sale for ?5250 at the weekend!!!

in nice red, 5 door with rear spoiler , oh has the recaro leather and heated seats, and sunroof.

just a couple of scratches on her

only 63,000 miles

begining to think i got a bargain!!!

the best bit is i only brought it as a stop gap, recently ordered a new mk 5 GTI which isn't due until mid may so was stuck after getting rid of my ST170 last week.

anyone with cash wanting a cheap GTI in may apply here

I will be looking to sell it on to someone as soon as the new cars here, failing that it gets traded to my VW garage who should give me ?5000 for it, meaning i have lost nothing...
