Thermostat
« on: 01 March 2011, 11:30 »
Hi, I had some problems in some very cold weather with my car gti mk2 16v 1.8, where it was stuttering down the road and eventually conked out one time but in slightly warmer weather was fine, then after being a bit of a prat and forgetting something someone mentioned to me 2 years ago when i bought it was there was no thermostat. Hence could this be the problem and secondly where does the thermostat fit on this engine and any one know a decent place to get one?

Matt

If you've got no stat your engine and cooling system won't be at optimum temp no. It could cause it to run slightly colder, so its thinkin its on choke slightly and overfuelling. Mine overfuels when cold and sorta kangaroos for a few seconds down the road in mornings. Your stat should be down with the water pump on the bottom left hand corner when you look at engine from under bonnet..in an alloy cast bit (the pump), beneath the lower most plastic pipe outlet.your lower rad hose goes to this pipe..

No power steering so I will have a look later, yeah all the characteristics say over fueling, kangaroos when cold like yours got quite bad the time it conked out but in the last 6 months when I have driven it on occasion as this was the winter before it has been spot on, fueling has always been a little rich so I think I need to get myself a thermostat in there to sort it all out.

Cheers Matt

It could be the warm up reg needing fuel pressure setting, that's what it is on mine as its too rich, but start with the thermostat and go from there. Its more likely to be fuel setup than the stat I'd have thought, as the head will still get warm and unchoke the wur through heatsoak..however the engine could still be at the wrong temp for the fuel mix its being supplied hence the kangarooing..it could also be isv issues if its cutting out and idling rough, do a bit of searching and youl find loads on setting it up, and what to test etc if the stat doesn't help that much..
