TDI Squeak from engine by alternator, pas pump.......?
« on: 13 February 2011, 11:32 »
Hi all. I've got this annoying squeak coming from around the alternator, pas pump, water pump area. Most noticeable on tickover just after starting the engine. It seems to be low down, sort of pas pump area but very hard to pinpoint. I don't think its the water pump as they tend to make more of a squeal, this is a pulsing squeak, thought it was the pas belt but have replaced that and the tension is good, also turning the steering does not have any affect on the squeak, thought it could be the injection pump but the noise is just from not there, could be the alternator but it seems its lower down. Took the timing belt cover off and its not from in there either. The alternator tensioning pulley and belt are new so shouldn't be from there. Any ideas to investigate further would be most welcome. I started it up this morning and it was quiet for about 15secs and then came back again, Other than that the engine runs a treat. Thanks in advance J  :undecided:

I used to have a Mondeo diesel that had a kinda running squeek on tickover, it was just the belts as a little spray of wd40 around the area and all disappeared, infact you'd be surprised what a racket the belts/pulleys do make when suddenly they go quiet with a bit of spray stuff on them..
Might be worth a little go just to see.. don't go mad with the wd40 though and careful where you apply it! not around the timing belt..

A mate of mine loves this trick regularly but he over does it..Not good.

Be carefull with wd40 on belts, could be the alternator bearing very dry in which case your looking at another alternator

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to try to pinpoint the culprit by removing the PAS belt and alternator belt in turn. I know the water pump runs off the alternator belt but I reckon she'll be OK running for 10min from cold without the coolant pumping around.
