is it safe to remove those what i think are heat sheilds from under car as they are hanging off and slapping my exhaust? can you get replacements?

On my last mk3 golf I had same problem.
I removed mine but was always worryed after that as the floor used to get hot in the moddle off car.
As said already would be best to buy a new one.

there's 3 or 4 fitted and most won't cause any issues removing them (but remember the plastic/rubber gear linkage and plastic fuel tank next to 2 of them!)

Best not to remove the ones above the exhaust as all sorts of pipes run behind them.
If its the one under the CAT then yes remove it.
