Engine Mounts
« on: 24 February 2005, 19:32 »
Just changed my front engine mount (8v Gti), What a nice easy job!

However my engine still tries to climb out the engine bay (at the front), the bracket that the top of the engine mount bolts to looks like it's moving.?

There was a hole that looked like it needed a bolt, to bolt the starter motor to said bracket, so I put a bolt through it and a nut on the end (tho' it looked like the backet was orginally tapped).

Now it a lot better but it still doesn't feel right..... if you accelerate and shut off in at low speed (forward and reverse) the engine revs by itself and the throttle pedal moves, like the engine moves so much it pulls the cable!

It's not as bad as it was before, but it's still there.? What else is there to check, could the back engine mounts be shot?

could be. hold the engine and try and move it in the bay. if you can move it a fair bit then maybe the back mounts are on their way out.

It's deffo the rear engine mount, in reverse the engine lifts so high the throttle pull rubs against the strutbrace and it opens the throttle !!!!!

So how hard is the rear engine mount to change, just been under the car and it looks like a nightmare, what do I have to take off to get to it?

its a pig to change

personnally id take it to a garage and get them to change it as its easier done with a proper car lift!

Well the mounts are on order and i've booked Friday off work to give it a go.

The 8v Undercurrent site suggests removing the airbox and going in from the top, looks the easiest, i'll try it that way first.
