Iv'e not been on hear in a while and the poor old gti has sat in the back of the garage pretty much unloved for the last year or so (mind you i do keep it clean
) anyway now the winter is on its way out i think its time to dig the old girl out. the reason i sat it up was after i rebuilt the engine i had a top end rattle after changing the lifters ect it was still there so i just left it. now i want to get it running right for run to the sun this year so i had a look and i think it may be the oil pump (i know i should of changed it when i done the rest of the engine) does anyone know if the oil pumps normaly play up on the 16v?

Dont think they are particularly prone to failure, but I expect they can wear over the years and not produce the pressure they did in youth. Did you clean the oil pickup when the engine was in bits, may be the cheapest place to start?

Replace it or clean the pick up pipe.
Might be worth checking the oil pressure as a 1st step.
