Red Pin Stripe Recaro Interior
« on: 24 January 2011, 15:42 »
A few days ago I bought a set of recaros for my MKII. They are the red pin striped ones which as far as im aware was an optional extra on MKII's around 88' onwards. The ones Pictured are not mine just using the picture for reference (I will upload some pics of mine once ive got the rear bench in)

They are pretty good nick, no tearing/visible wear on the bolsters and pretty clean but sadly there are 2 or 3 small holes/burn marks and the drivers side sub frame has snapped and been repaired (fairly poorly.) I was almost certain that there should be matching door cards to make a complete interior but the chap I bought them off (who I think was mistaken rather than straight fibbing as im local to him and he has offered to let me know of other bits he has I might need etc and hence isnt likely to try and stuff me as im highly likely to see him again) was adamant that the standard door cards in my 91' (grey with a dark grey stripe) were normally fitted along with these recaros.

I was sceptical (as I should have been - see below image) but as I managed to get the 2 fronts and 60/40 rear seat in pretty good condition for £250 I thought id be cursing myself later for passing them up if I didn't.

Ive been looking around for information on this set and I have seen it suggested that the door cards pictured below were fitted to some MKII's as standard (without the matching recaro seats) Does anyone know if this is correct? A few things Id love to know:

  • Have the red pinstripe doorcards been fitted to standard MKII's?
  • Does anyone have any of the red pinstripe door cards they are looking to sell and/or swap for my grey/dark grey stripe ones?
  • My golf never had recaros fitted from factory so does anyone have any links or information on how to fabricate and wire up a loom to plug the seats motors in?
  • Anyone got any info on the history etc of this style of recaros?

Cheers in advance for the help guys (^_^)

the doorcards in the picture are correct for those seats, and yes they were also fitted to normal GTIs with the red and black tartan pattern interior :)

the grey/dark grey cards are rainbow seat cards, and the wiring loom is a piece o wee, all you need is a live and an earth plus a fuse :)

yeah these were miles away, 5 hour round trip or thereabouts. cost an extra £50 of fuel

not that much of a bargain after that, plus bot the bases were damaged due to the manual subframes being a little bodged. luckily i had some undamaged bases frames in stock to fit plus found another set of cheap recaros with the right electric bases on

im really kicking myself as i found a mint recaro bench in a scrappy a few months ago but i had no room to fit it in the car (2 doors and 2 wings crammed in it!) plus i ran out of time to strip the fabric off the frame :(

the wiring loom is a piece o wee, all you need is a live and an earth plus a fuse :)

As im no electrician or even that handy with DIY could you elaborate a little for me please :)

The seats themselves have a little rectangular socket on the end of their wiring with 2 perpendicular pins so it looks a little like -> [| _ ]
Is this a fairly standard thing I can easily find a connector for and if so does it have a name?

You say all you need is a live wire, earth wire and fuse. (Sorry I know this is probably remedial but ive never done anything more than wire a plug!) Where would you earth each seat, and how would you wire it up to the battery/fuse box? Also what kind of amp fuse (if there is more than one rating for cars?  :embarassed:)

Thanks  :nerd:

the plug on the seats is a common vw connector, but you could just use spade plugs from your average cheap wiring crimp kit.  the red wire is your live/+ve, the brown is the earth/-ve :)

fuse you want is 20a, factory they usually had a thermal fuse but bog std 20 is fine.  to wire em in you could use the ciggy lighter wires, but thats a bit of a bodge. though you wouldnt need a fuse at least!

the better way to do it would be to remove the panel under the dash on the driver side, this will expose your fusebox. if you look above it you'll se a metal plate with spade connections and brown wires, run the earth here. if your car is a 91, the live feed you can take from a group of spades at the top of the fusebox on the back, labled 'Y' in my fusebox faq (CE2 fusebox, look on page 4) if you can see behind. but its easy to spot, there will be at least 2 big chunky red cables going into it.

to release the fusebox there is a white clip to the right which needs pulling downward, and a clip to the left which needs pulling to the left then rotate down and pull it off, theres a locking peg near the top. you'll see what i mean. then you need to push the left hand fusebox bracket leg to the left, then lift the fusebox up and towards you.  do this carefully then let it lower down, dont force anything as you dont want to pull any random wires out. then at the top of the fusebox to the right you should see the group of 4 Y spade connectors i mention, put your fused wire in here :)

i hope all that makes sence?
