clean out the :-

1. ISV
2. air intake between airbox & throttle body
3. throttle body
4. Idle screw in the throttle body itself

just make sure you give the ISV a wee squirt of WD40 after cleaning out

ISV is not very easily broke so fire ahead on taking it apart. there is a pic of it circled in my gallery if you dunno where it is

As for the tappets, there isn't alot you can do with them.
What happens is, as the miles pile on, they get clogged up with sh!t from the oil.
Apparently you can strip them down, do a search on clubgti.
Personally i would replace them for new. You will be amazed the difference it will make ?

Gambit, how come your alterator pulley rubs on the timing belt cover?
Surely this can't be right!

The engine was rebuilt about 36 k ago by a company called AudiGolfhits in north wales I can't even find the company, anybody any experience with them? I would have thought tappets would have been changed but assumption is the mother of all f*** ups!!!

Your alternator must be in a different place to mine!!! Speaking of alternators mines Shafted and so is my water pump pulley becoming more unamused with car and previous owner by the minute!

My tappets tick to. It's on my list of things to do soon. But lets face it it's not exactly urgent, the old girl just sounds like a tractor when she's cold.

Euro car parts do a good deal on tappets, and i can confirm that their pattern parts are of good quality, unlike some companies *cough* GSF
