Mk3 GTi Elec Sunroof
« on: 09 January 2011, 07:41 »
Hi all
On my mk3 gti, the electric sunroof works 'sort of'
When the switch is pressed either way, the motor only seems to work for about a second
If you tap the button the roof will move
But holding the button doesnt do anything
could this be a relay problem?
If so where is the relay located?
Any help appreciated

Hi there,
From what you say it sounds like a dodgy switch, can't be sure of that from here though..
If the mechanism has partly seized and operating against resistance it may be cutting out as a safety measure, again not sure about that, if you can get it open maybe have a look at the running areas..

The relays are located under the lower dash, roughly where your right knee would be in the driving seat.

cheers for that
the roof will open & close, but after a lot of switch tapping
its almost as if its got an indicator relay running it
obviously its not too worrying at moment, but will need to be sorted
is there anyway of testing the motor by running a live wire directly to it?

I've not done any auxilliary motor testing like that and probably wouldn't, i'd be looking at the actual mechanism and switch as a first call..
See how you go anyways.

Another train of thought is that electric windows are a common problem on these and it's rarely the actual motor that fails, it's the mechanisms.

to test the mech use the supplied key and open the roof, im guessing this will be fine, first thing id chack is the wire harness, if that is all ok id then try another switch, if you still have the smae problem id try the motor and if the problem is still their id fit a new sunroof..

not too hard, bit faffy but i did mine on my own with man flu a few years ago

My car was litterally 30mins ago doing nothing on switch. Robbed the motor out of my dads and it's all good. :afro:
