Steering sensation/ steering rack...strange feeling
« on: 18 January 2011, 05:48 »
Hello all,

I have just joined, as a month ago I bought my Mk6 Gti. It's a great car as I upgraded from a 1.4 tsi Scirocco..I am based in Geneva...

I just have one qustion and I am not sure if this has been discussed before, therefore I am posting here. turning my steering when the car is stationary or at very low speeds for example parking the car, I feel a wiggle in the steeering as if something is lose in the front suspension or steering rack. There is no noise but a wiggle in the natural flow of the steering

I have taken the car to two independent dealers here, they have both test driven the car. Both dealers say that there is nothing wrong and everything is normal. One of the techs said that it was something  to do with the power steering on the MK6.

I am really not sure what to believe, as my gut feeling is this surely cannot be normal, bearing in mind I am not a mechanic :-)

Any advice or response to this qustion will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys...

I don't think mine does that. But mine is right hand drive so could be different

Thanks for your comments, could there be a difference with right hand drive and left hand drive, in terms of power steering?

Not sure about that... but alot of early mk5's had steering rack issues. May be worth checking out or trying the mk5 board to see if the symptoms are similar.

Mine does not have a "wiggle" in the steering, it's very smooth. I don't see how RH or LH drive makes any difference.
I assume the VW garage checked the tyre pressures before test driving?

I know most the mk5 problems were when reversing and turning left on full lock.

I have booked my car in for a comprehensive check next week. The wiggle/notch is beginning to frustrate me, the car is only 8000km old. I hope to get it sorted quickly.
