R32: Emissions, Sensor & Mpg
« on: 11 January 2011, 09:52 »
Morning all....been a while since I was on here but hope this finds you all well?  Enjoying the winter in our VW's?

Anyway....had posted this on R32OC but got nothing back.  So thought I'd pop on here and ask my preferred VW site ;-)

---------------------------

Wonder if you can help.....

I have a 2008 R32 that I've owned for 6 months. When I bought the car from a dealer (in Darlington) it had an after market exhaust on it which according to them was preventing it from passing an MOT due to emissions. Luckily the car didn't need an MOT then and there, and as my mate is a master tech for VW I thought....get some money knocked off, get it looked at and sort it cheaper. They knocked off £300 and I took the car.

I didn't like the exhaust anyway as it was a little too loud for my liking and then as it happened, a week after getting the car by sheer fluke found a standard R32 exhaust for sale near me for £50. Exhaust bought and fitted, I thought great.

MOT has come round, and its failed on Emissions. When I say failed, I mean its like blowing 4 or 5 times the legal limit. So got onto my mate at VW and he connected it all up. Absolutely NO FAULTS whatsoever. All exhaust sensors reading fine, no errors. And all reading properly.

He suspects that the previous owner has possibly a) Decatted by smashing the cats out as the cat pipe all looks standard VW and/or b) programmed the sensors out by a flash or ECU remap! Arrgghhhh.

As its reading so high, he also thinks this may be contributing to my abysmal MPG. I am currently averaging 18-20mpg. And thats on a very steady drive to and from work. On a motorway 200 mile cruise, I am lucky to see 22mpg. I am getting about 230ish miles to a £70 tank. OUCH!.  My previous 3.2 TT averaged mid to late twenties, and easily saw 30ish on a long run.

Can any of you offer any explanations or suggestions as what to do next?

Thanks and regards

Andy

Can't comment on emissions as I have a '58 R32 so not had an MOT.

Your mpg sounds poor.

I get 22-24 in very congested town driving and high 20's on a run.

Dealer should be able to reflash your ECU.

As above get your friend to re-code the ECU so that you're sure it has the latest VW map on it.

Alrernatively find a decent tuner in your area and get them to do some logging, they should be able to see if your ecu/map has been altered
