i had the same problem with my mk3 it was the crank sensor the plastic casing on the cable breaks up and the wires perish

quick update ..............

drove the car didnt cut out for an hour thought it was ok then oil temp went to 78 and cut out right on a12 very fooking dangerous.

got eko tech carb cleaner foam, are the throttle bodys located by airbox??
also changed temp sensor and fuel filter but still no change ordered crank sensor from vw should get by weekend but any more info please let me no. want to get it sorted now gone on to long.

nice one reesty and f17 got crank sensor fitted today and all is well thanks for the knowledge!. goodtimes.
