Scraped underside of car, any damage?
« on: 19 November 2010, 08:07 »
I have just had a frustrating weekend with some friends who insist on having rocks all over their garden. Whilst pulling up, i could feel one on the underside of the car scraping. Very low speed, sub 5mph, so didn't travel far, no further than front seats. Rock was half submerged in ground, so there would have been some give there.

What could i have damaged, destroyed, scratched?

VW Golf Gti mk5 2007 plate. No body modifications.

Any help greatly appreciated.

More than likely just scraped the plastic cover under the car. If you have really damaged anything then it would be the sump, which you would notice as there would be a nice puddle under the car.

I wouldn't worry much, just stick your head under there and have a look around.

No oil pooling, the car was damaged on satday gone, and my wife works from home so car has been sat outside the house for 4-5 days. No oil pool.

My friend mentioned the sump, but the car was if anything scraped on the middle to driver side. Whereas he believes the sump is off to the left.

I'm hoping its as you say, just the scratch panel.

The sump would be generally central, to keep the mass over the front balanced. However, if there is no black pond on the floor then you'll be ok. Everything else that can't take a bit of a battering is tucked well inside the engine bay so I think you have little to worry about.

Undertrays can make a lot of noise when something contacts them, as there is usually a bit of a cavity between where they are mounted and the actual chassis which will emphasise the sound.
