returning to the fold . . .
« on: 27 October 2010, 13:55 »
Hi All

I was a member of this forum a few years back as Bri_mk38v.  Unfortunately I sold my then Mk3 GTI and bought a 'sensible' car due to ridiculous mileage for work and high petrol costs combined with low wages. Obviously I stopped popping into the forum and torturing myself, so long since forgot my logon details.

Anyway things move on and now times are better so a return to the fold has been possible. It has involved a change of career, job and even country but the desire for another VW never dies ;)

Trouble is VWs are not as common here in Dubai. From what info I can find out, 3 doors have hardly ever been imported and the 1.8T was never imported. The R32 didn't reach here at all in the MK4 version bar a  very few special imports. The Mk4 with a GTI badge is really a V5! Then on top of all that there are only a few enthusiast here so most of the possibles around are in a dire state.

So what to get, well after 4 months of searching and too many rejects to count I found this . . . .

A 1999 Mk4, 2wd US import Vr6, low mileage with a good set of receipts. There is some work to get her back to where she belongs but it is a super solid base I reckon. Oettinger kit was factory fitted, mille miglia wheels, bilsteins with H&R springs, leather interior and climate control (a must here). So far that is all I know.

First jobs will be to re-align the front bumper as it is pushed back slightly and sticking out either side, restore the front headlights as they are very cloudy and give it a proper clean.

I will post some pics in a bit.

Good to be back.

Thanks for the welcome guys, I really need to sort out some pics and get them up . . .

Mighty Elvi - yeah petrol is quite a bit cheaper, 1.7AED/litre which is about 28p so a full tank costs roughly 14 quid.

Snifferdog - I love dragon green bar far the best color MK3.

At last I have taken a pic. I know it is not a great picture but I plan on taking a few decent ones and starting a post of my progress in getting her back into shape in the MK4 forum.
