Mk1 Brake upgrade help!
« on: 27 October 2010, 17:55 »
I've almost completed my brake upgrade on my 1987 Mk1 GTi Cabrio.

I've used the Mk2 16v 256mm route.

I've upgraded all the bits that i needed e.g. Caliper + Carriers, Ball joints, Pads and Discs and track rod ends.

I just have 1 problem question.

Does any one know do i need to upgrade the tie rods?
I've changed one obviously as it is non adjusting.

The tie rods just about fit not leaving much room for tracking adjustments. The tie rods seem a bit short. I've adjusted the tie rods from the inner rack ends and from the outer track rod end ends.

The guy at Volkbits Pershore Road is quite knowlegable and has helped quite abit. He rekons they don't need changing.

Was hoping someone can please help me out and give me some advise or reasure me that the rods are not too short and can be adjusted.

iirc i read someone used mk2 track rods or maybe just ends. you will get bump steer though using mk2 hubs on a mk1, due to the difference in height of the track rod mounts. track rod or ball joint spacers will fix this if you find it bothers you when you drive the car.

I don't mind any bump as long as it is safe. Guy at Volksbits quite confidently said  it would be alright. I've changed the track Ends but am worried about the tie rods. They only leave approximate 10mm either side for adjustment

right, yeah i think someone said they used mk2 rods? as long as you can get the steering stright you should be ok. if too long you can cut the mk2 track rods down a little, i had to do this on some mk3 rods i got cheap off ebay, were around 10mm too long

I,ve now changed the tie rods and used MK2 Tie rods which are longer. They do just the job and they did not need any cutting. I have finally completed the upgrade and am extremely happy with the results. I am on hand if any1 needs advise. :nerd:
