Just a cautionary thread...
« on: 30 October 2010, 15:26 »
This is a cautionary check more than anything really.

My mk3 16v GTi seems to have a somewhat random idle.  When sitting on it's own it will idle anywhere between 1,000 to 2,000 revs, no matter how I have been driving it.  Sometimes I'll be doing motorway speeds and when it comes to sitting at a standstill it'll sit happily at 1,000rpm, other times at 2,000rpm.  I've heard mention of this possibly being something to do with an air valve.  Any suggestions?

Also, having never owned a GTi before I just want to make sure it's running sweetly.  It'll sit at just over 3,000rpm at 70mph in 5th gear and the oil will normally be between 92 and 95 degrees.  The hottest it has ever got is 106 (in stop start traffic on a cold day).  Once again, this normal?  I'm running fully synthetic 10W-40.

That's ok, it started to smell a bit hot, which caused me to get slightly concerned. haha
