Engine swap
« on: 14 October 2010, 22:03 »
I have a 330 E46 BMW with rear end damage. Its got me thinking would it be possible to get the BM engine in my mk2 golf.

Im thinking it would be too heavy and too big.

What do you guys think.

Yes with a stupid amount of work + money, converting the Golf to rwd will not be easy.

Engine is not that heavy to be honest.

Could you not run the engine transverse rather than longitudinal and have it front wheel drive? Saying that...it's a straight 6 right? Doubt you'll be able to fit it transverse with the gearbox, and longitudinal you're gonna need to start chopping out the bulkhead I presume, which then would lead to structural issues??

It is a straight 6 and about 12ft long   so with the gearbox would not fit in the front.

Yes straight 6 plus major changes mean lots of work with the dvla to get the car back on the road.

ok the firewall is gong to have to be chopped as well as the whole tunnel  and the rear floor is going to need twerking lots.

but the slideways potential is immense

or you chould just give the engine box loom and diff to me
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

You need to fine a gearbox etc and mod to suit, don't think you would have enough room to be honest.
