Rear wiper motor
« on: 10 October 2010, 15:23 »
The rear wiper is kicking the bucket. Intermittant and having looked at it, the mechanism is juddering when spinning - without the wiper attached.

Apart from finding another 20 year olg motor in the scrappy, do any other models rear wiper motor fit? Polo, mk3 golf etc? I'd prefer to replace it with a newer one if possible?

Cheers.

Hard wire the motor to a battery and check again, erratic behaviour is usually down to broken wires, from where the loom crosses over to the tailgate, pull back the rubber tube, (top left when the tailgate is open) and check for broken wires....
Its unlikely that the motor is worn out, as they get little use, but may need a little TLC, stripping, freeing off, lubricating, etc...

Cheers for the swift replies. I have removed the motor and if spins every time. The mechanism itself is very juddery and there is grease over the outside of the casing.

How would I get the cover off to look at the inside? I don't recall (from memory) seeing any screws..

there are a load of plastic plugs holding it on, pull the cover towards you starting from passenger side, put hand over each clip to stop you losing em when they fly off. you'll note on passenger side there is a dent in the tailgate to allow you to put a screwdriver or similar under the plastic to get leverage. mk1 motor will bolt in if you swap the metal bracket on from your old motor but the connectors on them are different i think. prob not much use to know this anyway more likly to find mk2 than mk1!

Cheers RJ. I've got the motor out but Thom89 mentioned stripping the motor itself. Not sure how to open up the unit.. :undecided:

I'll take a nose at polo and Mk3 golf ones next time i'm at the scrappy. Pain in the rear not having a working wiper.
