Electric windows and central locking on my mk1
« on: 30 January 2005, 21:00 »
I'm thinking of adding electric windows and central locking for my 1982 1.6 mk1 gti and I need a bit of advice.
I have seen loads of kits in the mags that all seem very reasonable but does cheap mean sh!t? I had a mk2 with after market windows that f**ked up at tesco and I had to get in and out through the windows.
are the kits easy to fit for a thick sh!t like me?
should I do it all before all after I fit an alarm?

all help gratefully received

cheers

dave

Several types of kits on the market, universal ones which you have to set up yourself or the ones designed for a mk1. I shoved in a set for a MK1 cab which are the scissor type which with a push drop straight in. As long as you get your runners nice and clean and make sure the window frame is aligned most kits should be ok paid around ?110 for two front ones, they came with pretty decent switches which fit straight in. The only precaution i took was to install individual relays for each switch as opposed to one so at least i could get out if it go's tits up. It will take you a while to install as through time and wear and tear the window runners twist and you might need to adjust your door other wise your window will be slow at certain points you wont initially notice this when you originally have manual ones as you compensate this not knowingly.

German and French parts I think the place is called anyway the kit they supplied was pretty good, don't know if they do the MK1 tintop.

the universal remote central locking fit from volkbits is fine for ?40. I had no trouble at all installing it in the first set of doors. just drilled 2 holes to mount the solenoids. the 2nd set of doors I moved them into had VAG c/l so I used those mounting points.

I'd install it before the alarm then the installer can wire the c/l up to work with the alarm. that's what they did with mine anyway. also some alarms feature 'total closure' so your windows will do up if they're down when  you arm the alarm.
