you always best to go straight to the company. Going through a broker will cost you more, thats how they make their money.

An example would be my previous insurance, went to get it through Swinton's (broker) who arranged cover for me from Zurich, which cost me more per year than it would have done if i had gone straight to Zurich myself.

Chaucer will not deal with you direct (as with many insurance underwriters) as stated on their website.....

"We offer our products exclusively through a national network of intermediaries.

Call our Broker Development Team on
01227 284700 to find your nearest provider"

Also you will often find you get different deals through the same underwriter (eg Chaucer) depending on the broker - the rates a broker offers through a particular underwriter can depend on many factors such as that brokers target market, the size of their account with that underwriter, how profitable it it (eg premium taken v claims paid out) etc etc.

Your mates statement that "you will have a lot of trouble with brokers" is a bit of a strange as obviously there are lots of different brokers, many specialise in different things (and may well have specialist schemes arranged with an Underwriter to suit their target market), charge different amounts etc etc etc...If you go to a pub you dont like, you dont usually then try and buy your beer direct from the brewery do you?
