Clutch advice needed
« on: 24 January 2005, 13:11 »
I?ve owned by 1998 Mk3 8v for three years.

In all that time it as always had a creaky, heavy clutch.

It?s already eaten one cable ? had a new one fitted 18 months ago.

Various people have looked at it ? a local clutch ?specialist? suggested I just replace it ? which I?m tempted to do.  He quoted ?170 to replace it.

It seems to be getting worse to the point where I don?t like driving it round town ? too much like hard work.  I?d rather drive the wife?s 1.2 52 reg Polo!

We?re driving down to South of France in summer so I want to sort it.

Is a new clutch the solution do your eckon ? or is there something else I should consider.

Are all Mk3 clucthes heavy and a bit jerky?   I?ve only ever known this Golf, so no idea if it?s standard!

Cheers

my clutch was fine when i bought it but when the winter came and the cold started to set in it started to go jerky i'm thinking of changing the cable or getting it greased.
either way should sort it out i'm sure
cheers

i will say something else though it's not heavy but it seem to get a little heavy at the bottom if you know what i mean

Its not normal for the clutch pedal to be heavy.
If clutch cables keep breaking then i would suggest that the clutch pressure plate is heavily worn. If this is the case then its new clutch time.
