Another relay question
« on: 12 September 2010, 13:00 »
This is an on going thing, the car starts and runs perfect every morning but when going to restart it wont fire up, Now i know when its going to play up as sure enough there is no click from the relay and the fuel pump doesn't prime,  if i stick my hand down under the fuse box and wiggle it will click and starts no problem,  it never cuts out when driving though.

Is this common of the Fuel pump relay?   Also can some one confirm that relay 30 is ECU and relay 167 is Fuel pump?

Those are the correct relay numbers

They should be warm to the touch after a bit of driving I believe.

Yea they are warm to touch once it starts, so they are working OK,  i think its just got sticky and wont click over on initial start,  If i flick it or wiggle it or indeed just leave it for 2 mins or so it will click over and the fuel pump primes.   What i dont understand is the fuel pump runs for a few seconds then stops so obviously the relay has then turned back off, When i crank the engine over i guess it then clicks back on permanently but its never not done that...  is there a second relay that controls the continuation of the pump rather than just the initial prime?

I broke down today at work, Car didn't start, so i turned ignition off and back on,  relay clicked,  started, great so i took it into the garage at work and faffed with my suspension and started it, drove it out of the garage and it sat for 5 mins while i locked up.

Anyway when i got back it wouldn't start!  .... Nothing would work,  banging, flicking ... waiting

So i bridged the fuel pump relay, fuel pump ran,  but still Would NOT start!!!  I plugged the relay in with the cover off, pressed on the internal switch and fuel pump ran... Nothing!!!

So.. Eventually i dropped the fuse box out and down and pushed all the plugs at the back, ensuring it was all plugged in ok and then gave got box a bang and it clicked and started!!!

I left ignition on for a while and the ECU relay got warm etc..  SO its either connections or fuse box,  but i really cant afford to replace things that arnt needed!

Has any one got an ideas what it could be??  Its scrap or fix at the moment  :undecided: :undecided:

It cut out on me while driving for the first time today - A clout of the fuse box did work though

Had it on vag-com again, no fault codes.

I think it might be the ECU Relay,  has any one had experience of the ECU Relay stopping the fuel pump relay too?

if ecu isnt getting power, it wont prime the pump relay, so yes ;)

Fixed, it was the ECU relay,  i fitted a new one but another black one.

Fitted a genuine white start up relay and its spot on now
