don't really know much about chokes but i'd check the choke cable for damage, corrosion or kinks as this could get it wedged on in the outer at some point. i'm assuming this is a manual choke but like i say, don't know much about them! i just remember it happening on my mates old mini and the cable was all frayed and wouldn't budge once it got jammed in the outer.

Check the 3/4 point unit, its the big cylinder on the left side of the carb with a plunger sticking out of it.  It should be sticking out about 15mm with the engine off, then retract to 8mm a few seconds after the engine has started.  Sounds like this has packed in!

This unit is controlled by the TTV which is the round plastic bit with an electrical connection to it, check this is getting 12v with the ignition on, if not check your fuses!

If all this checks out fine, check the autochoke is getting 12v with the ignition on, the unit is on the right side with 2 coolant pipes and an electrical plug.
If this is OK, then it might be that no coolant is getting to the autochoke, which is caused by the coolant channel o'ring in the inlet manifold corroding and  sealing up the hole.

Post back with your findings

More than likely the waxstat on the front of the carb is faulty.

the plunger on the cylinder doesn't retract it stays out at about 15mm is there anyway of doing a temp repair on it, like removing the power to it?

Also i recently put some of this stuff in my coolant system to find leaks and black them, do you recon this could have blocked the autochoke?

cheers for the help
