Help! Removing alarm, wont start!
« on: 07 August 2010, 11:03 »
Ok, I left the garage after 10 last night, having reassembled things following a radiator and matrix change. While I was at it, I wanted to remove a bunch of wires from an old alarm, these went from the fuse box area, along the back of the dash, and through the bulkhead. There was nothing on the end of the wires in the engine bay, just the connectors, all components had been removed. I cant see any alarm/immobiliser boxes in the fuse box area either (and none in centre console).

So, as the wires to the engine bay were doing nothing (as far as i could see- no ends joined etc), I thought id just chop them short, and get them out of the bay and from behind the dash (as it was in bits). Leaving them attached in the fuse box area, for easier removal at a later date.

Unfortunately, Im a muppet, and cut the bunch of wires with the battery connected.... Fizzle pop... As I cut them all at once with a pair of pliers. So something was live, and earthed through something else as I cut. The clock went off, as fuse 21 on my post 90 digi (pf code) fuse box blew. No other fuses blew.

So on reassembly, It wont start. Turns over, fuel pump primes, duno if there is a spark, as I was on my own and unable to check.

Now im no auto electrician, and have not looked into this at all yet, but im not sure where to start. Is it possible I fried the ECU? Can it be something easy please?

Does it have an immoboliser? Mine has a square key thing in the dash above the headlight switch and had an old alarm behind the shelf on the passenger side, which decided to work ( kind of) when I left the sunroof open in heavy rain  i pulled out the block conectors and she started first time. Mines a 90 pb engine.
Worth having a look see??  I didn't know mine was there untill it went wrong I haven't the alarm fob or anything to say it was there.

Im pretty sure all the box's are out, as I've just been in the guts of the dash doing the matrix. But I'll have a nose, you never know, It could have been something installed by an Imaginative mechanic, not in the usual places.

I think I'll begin fault finding this week. See if I can work through components. I may be in danger of learning something....

I'll get on the 'search' but any tips on component testing would be welcome. I have a multi-meter. Ooh, and a B in physics ( I think)!

Check to see if you have a spark and go from there

  • If I can't fix it at home, it ain't getting fixed.

+1 One of the wires may have fed the coil via the alarm/immobiliser...

In the interest of keeping this thread updated, till I solve the problem....

Yep- No spark. Its getting fuel, and the ISV is buzzing away. So its lack of spark (spark plug held against the head). The ignition control unit thingy (on top of the relay) is getting the required voltage over pins 2 and 4, but the coil gets nothing. As per haynes tests, there is no sign of the 2 volts over the low tension side of the coil when its just switched on....  So apparently that suggests a faulty ignition control unit. Will try to get a go on a replacement (have a couple of other golf fans locally) and see what happens...

Tried a second hand ignition control unit, and no joy. Still only poor voltage to the coil (up to 0.05v on the 20v scale of my multimeter, nowhere near the 2.00 its apparently meant to have, according to haynes). So i'll try something else.

I would guess it is linked in someway to the alarm wiring.

I had the same issue.. as i mentioned earlier i still think its to do with the alarm wiring to the coil, i managed to power the coil directly to the battery on mine and she started!... Then took a dramatic route!

It Lives!  I was waiting at my garage for a friend/mechanic to arrive, and as they were late I started fiddling with connectors.... I had made a poor job of getting the earth connector onto the coil, so re fitted that and it started no problem. So two lessons learned- 1. Dont mess with electrics when the battery is connected. 2. dont refit an ignition coil (this was after the matrix change) in a dark garage after sunset, using a wind up torch!
