16v Ribbed belt tensioner thing!! changing help!!!
« on: 09 August 2010, 19:28 »
Hi all

Just solved where this nasty knocking noise was coming from,

need new pants as i thought it was bottom end but turns out its just the ribbed belt tensioner is wobbling and knocking against the engine block.

Anyone ever changed this part as the haynes manual is sh!te and doesn't even mention it really!

Rob

youll need a new timing kit, around £75.

> line up all the timing notches on the pulleys. one on the crankshaft pulley, another on the cam pulley (take off top belt cover)
> jack up that side remove the wheel (try and avoid the sills, go for somewhere really solid underneath)
> find a big screwdriver and slot it into the altenator belt pulley, facing away from you, then pull it up towards you to remove the tension, slip belt off.
> remove the 4 bolts holding the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft
> remove belt cover then belt and the tensioner
> fit new belt and tensioner, be careful not to move anything that you've lined up!
> you'll need a special tool for the tensioner, but you can make one out of a coat hanger!

its not the timing belt tensioner though, its like a wheel which is smooth that sits against the ribbed belt going around the alternator.

Im confused..

I did my timing belt two weeks ago and if I'm understanding you right, the piece you are talking about is the tensioner for the alternator/water pump belt. If you put a spanner on it to tighten it, the leverage of the spanner will reduce the tension on the belt as it hinges back.
If I'm against picketing, how do I show it?

nice. is it the wheel itself or is it the actual arm its attached to thats loose? I'm afraid Ive never removed one completely, just the wheel but I would think if thats the fault it would be no bother getting one.

My god! just been to parts place and got the right bit according to the computers, only thing is it doesnt match to my bloody engine at all!

I think i must have a different engine. The smooth ribbed belt tensioner, which goes against the flat bit of the belt is a metal wheel which is attached to a solid bracket wirh a rectangular part over the bolt hole.

I have the etos program and cant identify the part i need at all from it!

Its a mystery.

Im gonna put a pic up
