MK3 97 GTI Leak near to front bumper offside???
« on: 31 July 2010, 22:08 »
Hello,

I have just purchased a 1997 MK3 GTI 8v with bags of service history. When I purchased the car I inspected it inside and out. I noticed the air con was not really cool, so as part of the deal got it regased. Since I have got the car I have noticed on my drive yellow fluid dripping close to the front bumper on the offside. I have had a look but can see where its coming from. I thought it maybe aircon linked but I am unsure. Does anyone have any ideas?? It drips about 3 to 4 spots a day.

Many thanks

Radiator bottom hose ???

Don't think so with yellow fluid, sounds more like a air con issue.

Our trucks at work use Yellow anti freeze. I know a few of the drivers put this in their cars but I would not touch the stuff personally. Couldn't tell you about aircon as I don't have that luxury on my Mark 3

It might be the die they used to find the air con leak, anti freeze should be blue or pink.

i'd go with a/c leak as it needed to be regassed intially and the oil/dye is a yellowy colour, and your anti freeze is probaly blue, stick your head under the bumper and have a look and you'll probaly be able to see, get a drip on your finger have a sniff if it smells like your coolant resevoir it's your rad hose or your rad my rad on my 16v started leaking (no drips yet though), if it dont the only other thing at the front is your a/c condenser and pipes to it

Yep, have stuck my head under and cleaned all the pipes with a rag, i found the leak. Its a tiny bubble which pops just to the outter side of a nut which screws into a/c consenser. Its a pipe about 6 inches long with nuts at either end. I guess this pipe can just be replaced and the system popped up again??

Any ideas??

Yep but you will need the system draining / depressuring 1st, then replace the pipe and regas as required.

Look in the yellow pages for a specialist and they should sort it out for you.
