Whirling Sound ... + Advice needed
« on: 26 July 2010, 12:43 »
Hi All, Finally got my GtTdi 130bhp 5 door engine code ASZ on Saturday (chuffed to bits with it)...But i have a few questions well problems

1.Have noticed that when i put my foot on the power there is a whirling sound at about 2k revs but then goes at about 3.5k revs this only happens when car is in motion now being a total novice to the golfs im not sure if it is just the turbo kicking in or something else ?...

2.Also the inner cv boot is split (does this need to be changed as quick as poss ?)

3.There is also a Sqeeling/skreeching sound comming from the front drivers side when i put the car on full lock steering (could this be the tie rod and track rod end ?)

4. And finally whist in here does anyone know how to fit a standard front splitter (ordered one off ebay but i have a funny feeling there will be no guide on how to fit it ) it comes with clips

Any info on any or all of these things is much apreciated

1.) Without hearing it internet diagnosis is almost impossible, I can't really hear my turbo spooling up in my TDI, but it might be better sound proofed than a Golf? How loud is it?

2.) Dunno, but I'd get it sorted ASAP.

3.) Sounds like the Alternator Pulley, do a search on here or Google and you'll find it's very common & easy to fix, could just be the tensioner or Belt though.

4.) Dunno, probably been covered loads in the MK4 sections.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

1. Its not too loud to be honest and can not hear it at all when window is closed ( tbh im thinking it might have something to do with the cat as had a similar prob on my previous car started with same noise)

2. Hopefully going into garage tomorrow to check it out and give it the once over

3. Thinking it is the track rod end and/or tie rod as there seems to be slight play in the wheel when i tuen the steering wheel

4. Done a search but with no joy (maybe not looking in the right place)

Also noticed something else my temp gauge is seriously messed up starts off by staying on 0 temp for a good 15 mins (not even kreeping up slowly) then goes upto 90 then down to 30 then back to 0 or any random temp but never over 90 or not upto now anyway

Tel, ya what guys im pig

4.  Two lower torx screws in each wheel arch then grip and rip; start from one side

Change your thermostat and whack some fresh coolant in

Car went into the garage today and have been told the following ...

2. Cv boot does need to be done asap.. (as i thought it would)

3. Turns out to be the Auxiliary belt tensioner as there loads of play in the tensioner itself aswell as the track rod end and tie/axel rod needs replacing

4.Cheers Rhyso for the info on splitter (fitted it yesterday evening)

thermostat also being changed and fresh coolant so that should solve my temp gauge issue .

As for problem 1. turns out there is nothing wrong with cat or exhaust .. the guy at the garage said it sounds like a pin hole and when you apply power its like it is sucking air but not too sure where from a case of elimination and he will take a closer look tomorrow when its up having the other stuff done to it
