MPH needle shacking when driving?
« on: 15 July 2010, 15:39 »
Does your MPh needle shack when driving, mine is shacking like its being affected in the bumps in the road.

Is this right?

When I removed the old speedo cable the square end was bent.... could something not be aligned correctly causing this?

a jiggly needle is usually caused by a dry or damaged speedo cable, sometimes a little lube sprayed into em revives it. on mine there were some places where the outer sleeve had worn thru to the metal, I cleaned out any crud and bits of sheith that had got into the gaps in the metal sleeve and taped all the gaps up. little spray of silicone oil down the end of the cable and within a day or so the jiggling stopped :)

easier to buy a new cable, but make sure you give it a spray o lube before you fit as the aftermarket cables can be a bit dry. also you'll need to swap over the old speedo gear and make sure you dont forget to swap over the retaining circlip otherwise the gear will fall off and be lost in the box!

oh and be carefull when removing the old cable, the gear can get caught under the lip on the box and if that happens its easy to pop the gear off and loose it

Do you mean shaking? As in wobbling whilst driving giving an "ish" reading?
Yes, something being bent would cause this. It's a dead basic design, cog on gearbox end rotates turning the flexi drive that connects to the back of the speedo giving your speed.

If it's misaligned it'll click, whirr and give a shaking speedo reading. Could be a simple as little bit lube needed, check the path to back of clocks is not obstructed, any sharp turns or may mean your cable is on it's way out. They're only about a tenner and not too difficult to change, albeit you do need to get round to the back of the clocks which if you have shovels for hands like me, can be a fiddle.

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

just changed the speedo cable for a new one. New cog etc. The mph is working. I will leave it for a bit and see if it clears. If not i will get some spray in there

sorry to hijack, but the 16v cables are nearly £30! i bought 1 and it sucked the oil from my box up and all over my clocks, dash wiring etc. didnt know until it was dripping on my brake pedal! then the smell of gearbox oil was confirmed! how do i check the breather on the box, i took the black plug out and poked a small driver in there, it goes in a few inches but does stop...? any one else heard of this?
