yeh the jack fit's straight into the earphone plug on the ipod, only way you would know if you have rca plugs on the back of the stereo is removing the stereo and taking a look or if you have instructions for the stereo check that, i paid £19.99 for my lead from maplins and is the propper ipod lead

if i go the 'jack' way, how does it work ? if i want the ipod on what does it take over because it doesnt have its own button does it,

when you say ipod lead from maplin its not the jack one that your on about aswell is it ?

my stereo has the aux option which plays the ipod through, the cable comes with a 3.5mm jack on 1 end (fits into ipod) and 2 rca plugs on the other end (fits into the back of the stereo) altho useing the option you cannot control the ipod through the stereo which is the only downfall but for £20 what more would we expect?

i have one of them but wasnt sure whether it would work because i dont have a designated 'aux' button on my unit

You hold the cd button down to access the aux feature I think
