Hey this is my first post, just really looking for any advice or opinions. i currently drive a little 1.0 3cyl corsa, not had any problems with it but im looking for something with a bit more poke. my mate who is a mechanic turned up at my house yday with a black golf gti mk1. it looks in mint condition an ive fallen in love with it, its done 92k, not sure how many owners. im thinkin about trading in my corsa so i can buy this golf but i dont know anything about golfs so i just wanted to know what should i be looking for when i have a look around it, is there any known problems with golfs on high mileage and do you think its a good move getting rid of my reliable corsa for an older car. sorry about the essay any advice or opinions are much appreciated, cheers.

Have a good look around here on the forum and check where the rear subframe bolts to the chassis.

Golf > Corsa (i think thats the greater sign :D )
Thats all you need to know!

Other than that German cars don't understand mileage!
Would be a nice swap if you dont mind looking like the coolest person on your street!
But also one of the slowest :D
All the guys on here are pretty good guys and won't steer you wrong, so if you ever have any problems you have your help!

My vote is Golf
 MK2 VR y0!

erm not that im aware.
good old 8v´s . I have had one up to over 200000 miles before it started burning oil but I used to service it every time the oil started to turn, so every 2000 miles.
But they are simple it is far less t ogo wrong and you can do most of the work provided that you got a haynes manual and you are fairly compitent.

I Had mine rebuilt by 'the engine shop' (TES) for around 800. and it had a years warranty too. Runs like new

+1 but what do you mean by one of the slowest!???? bredzia, Also note that 92k is very low mileage for a 27 year old plus car let a lone a dub... my previous mk1 GTI is still on the road with over 220k!.... I bought the car with something like 160k and it still pulled like a train!

It also depends if your mate knows what he's got. A 92k mint mk1 would fetch very good money. Check for rust all over and especially in the inner wings. Check the fuel filler neck for rust both inside (just inside the petrol cap) and outside as they get rusty, bits fall into the tank and then the fuel system sucks all the rusty particles in. Check for leaks around the windscreen and check for damp carpets and a wet fusebox. But as as already mentioned, have a search around this site and in the mk1 maintenance section. You should also have a look at this site for all your mk1 info. http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/
......now officially dubless.
