MK3/4 Front hubs on to a mk2
« on: 19 May 2010, 17:36 »
Can you fit MK3/4 hubs on to a mk2 so i can run 288mm disc?
MK4 GTI T AGU, REVO Remap, BMC carbon box, Miltek cat back, Forge diverter valve, THS FR3 engine/Gbox mounts, Some random alloys, lowered on coilovers.

Yeah read that one, what i have is discs, pads, calipers and carriers from a mk4, don't mind having to get 5 stud wheels but want to know if the hub from a mk4 or 5 will fit on the axle, i think the bearing measurements are the same??? this way all i need is a set of front hubs and new bearings and possible brake pipes.

mk4 288 callipers & carriers will fit a MK3 5 stud bearing carrier. the MK4 bearing carrier is a totally different shape so no good to you.  MK4 discs & pads may fit but not 100%.

trouble is though you cant just throw 5 stud hubs onto 4 stud wishbones, you need to fit MK3 5 stud widetrack as well

So mk3 wishbones and hubs will do it, so if got mk3 wishbones and hubs that will work, is there anything else needed?
Also would it have to be GTI wishbones or just any mk3?
Also for the rear is it a mk3 axle for  the wide track or just the stub axles?
then i go wide track all round

would need 5 stud bits:
wishbones
track rods
roll bar
bearing carriers + hubs
driveshafts

alternatively if you swap on passat 5 stud bones instead you can keep a MK2 shape roll bar.

for the rear swapping the beam is a lot of work for widetrack, plus not all mk3 beams are actually any wider. can convert to 5 stud at the back just by switching to MK3 rear discs, put some spacers on there and job done. alternatively if you'd prefer not to use wheel spacers you could put a spacer behind the stub axles + longer bolts, was a discussion about this recently.
Of course if you dont have a GTI rear beam then a beam swap is more worthwhile, but as above it wont always get you wider. there is a great thread on clubgti with a big list o beam widths.

Cheers jonny, got a gti rear beam already, so easy to get 5 stud for then, thats good, will price up passat bones and hubs now, it just seems to me probabley the cheapest brake upgrade for me as i already have the calipers and carriers.

Which passat wishbones would i need?

mk3, corrado or passat 5 stud bearing carriers will do, all same. the passat 5stud wishbones you want are 94-96 ones :)
