1997 Golf Gti 16v Turbo Help
« on: 22 May 2010, 19:08 »
Hey people, just wondering if anyone has any solid information on turboing a 16v. I'm looking for around 250-280 bhp. Can anyone advise me on the best way to achieve this? Also how much bhp can the std internals handle while keeping them in the engine? I do have a spare 8v engine. Will changing the bottom ends drop the compression ratio? Any information will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Better to switch to a 1.8T.

What would I need to change to fit the engine, gearbox, driveshaft etc?

Well yes but your looking at mega bucks to get 250bhp out of it.

i reckon cheaper than a 1.8t swap, unless you can find a donor for pennies.. which just isn't possible these days

i followed up this when i had my valver as i wanted to supercharge it..
look on vwvortex for some tips as theres loads of info on there.
wossner pistons and forged rods are the way to go.. you will also need some exhaust manifold made up, a common way (and cheap is the one from the audi S2 and chop off one of the exhaust ports and weld it up (as its a 5cyl). 1.8t inelt plenum mated to the bottom part of the 16v inlet is another thing they do but not essential.
