Right I'm baffled just taken my car for an mot to see what's left to do before letting her loose on the public highway and the strangest thing has happened. It failed on one of the light bulbs so on parking it in the dark garage I decide to put my headlights on and at the same time flash the spots  to see what was what. when I did I flash the bam/spotlights the car stopped running and all the dash lights went out. Turning the key no ignition lights nothing...  It is as if there isn't a battery attached . I checkedthe battery with a voltmeter and it's reading 12v ?? Any clever peeps out there who can tell me what's happened?

I'd be checking the back of the fuse box to see if it's getting power. Sound slike something has melted or blown or somehwere in the main power harness.

Horney u are the winner took the fuse box off and the main power cable had somehow melted and looked loose  A quick repair and boom she running again - u are this weeks mastermind champion

Nice one! I'd be having a good look round there for a reason why it melted, must be shorting somewhere. You don't want a fire! They suffer from water damage due to leaking seals so I'd advise cleaning out the rain tray in the engine bay and cleaning out the sunroof drain channels.

Will do..... the other things it failed on were rear brake hose ferrules corroded, offside steering rack split and carbon monoxide emmisions..... Considering it's not too bad. How easy will it be to fix the gaitor and anyone know anywhere in nottingham that can sort the emissions?

What year is the car? Get it set up as per RJ's guide on here and should be fine unless something is wrong.

Steering rack gaiter is a piece of piss. Wind the track rod end and lock nut off having marked where they were. Slide old boot off, slide new boot on, zip ties, track rod end and lock nut back on, bolt back to hub. Job jobbed.

It's a 1990 driver 1.6 carb but I'm thinking maybe the plugs might not have been changed in a while so ordered some new ones today.
Ta will tackle the gaitor Monday .. Just spent an hour trying to get the rear number plate bulbs out!!!!! Boy they were rusted...

Ha ha yeah those number plate lights are a PITA.

If it's a carb car then it should be easy to just lean it off a bit for the test. New plugs, leads, rotary arm and dizzy cap would be worth doing anyway. A good oil and filter change can also help with emissions.
