Service question and also airbox question.

Hi there guys , I got my mk2 at the weekend . Am going to be giving her a good go over and service this weekend.

One question is , The best oil to use and what most people commonly use ? .Grade, brand etc etc...

Also it is a 1987 16v and i have the old school fuel injection system. Is there any way you can put an aftermarket airfilter on or is a panel filter the best option..

Any good brand 10w40 oil should be ok.

Probably not worth it, but piper actually do a box filter for the K-Jet system. Expensive though!

+1 Panel filter all the way. I bought a Ram-Air Induction kit about a year ago... BIGGEST WASTE OF 50 QUID EVER!
Spent 40 on a piper cross panel filter about 11 months ago and its honestly brilliant, also you don't need to declare it to insurance as its not a modification as such... claim negligence ;-) lol

Seriously though, Try Tesco Extra they sell Castrol Magnatec for 16 quid 10W - 40 in Halfords its over 20 quid!

Rumour has it that Castrol Magnatec is not that highly rated on this forum for Mk2's...having said that I have just filled my 16v with it because it was on offer 

Many swear by Quantum Synta semi-synthetic (the stuff you can buy quite reasonably from VAG, www.vwspares.co.uk, etc) - I almost always use this stuff and will probably go back to it as it's a quailty oil.

Another consideration is using fully synthetic 5W-40...

Fuchs 10w40 is even cheaper, and very good oil.
You can buy it from GSF, and Euro car parts.
